The 10 day Master Cleanse

Hey Guys and Dolls!

As you can see from the title I'll be discussing the Mater Cleanse, which was thrown into the lime light after Beyonce used it to lose weight for her Movie 'The Dream Girls'. This cleanse has been around since the 40's actually and was created by Stanley Burroughs.

I was looking through Youtube at channels of people I am subscribed to, then I saw a 'recommended video' about the Master Cleanse in which I took some time to watch. After doing some more on-line research I decided to try out the cleanse. This post will provide you with information about the  master cleanse what is needed, how to go about it, the pros, the cons and what to expect from the cleanse.

You all know that I do not believe in 'fad diets' and for me its not a diet, I just want to cleanse my system and well if it can shake some body fat off me I'm not complaining! I would say now though YES you will lose a lot of weight during the cleanse  but you can easily put most of it back on if not all of it back on once you ease your way back to eating solid food. I am doing this cleanse to detox my system and the ease myself into my Pescetarian Diet which I will discuss in a later post, YES I won't lie I also have some body fat I still want to get rid of (: so weight loss is welcome.

What is The Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse is a modified juice fast that does not permit consumption of any food; it substitutes food with tea, and also a mixture of : Water (Bottled not from the tap), Organic Maple Syrup (Grade B), Organic Lemon, Cayenne Pepper (which is ground red pepper). During the day you are to drink 8 to 12 glasses of the mixture and at night you drink your herbal laxative tea.

The Three Phases of the Master Cleanse

I have read that the master cleanse can be done in 3 phases:

  1. Ease in - which entails a 3 day period in which you 'ease' your self off eating processed foods
  2. The Lemonade Diet - 10 days of drinking your cleanse mixture and tea at night
  3. Ease out - 3 days of eating more and more complex food.
Phase 1 is not necessary, and I shall not be following it, simply because I am already disciplined with food and I have fasted well over 30 hours before and only drank water during that period! Those of you that are not so keen on cutting out food straight away or are not used to fasting may want to follow phase one as it would not be such a big shock to your system and your impulse to want to eat will be reduced. It should also prepare you mentally for the 10 day cleanse! 

What to consume during Phase 1

Day 1 - Get rid of all processed food, and swap this with Fruit and Vegetables (40/60 ratio of Fruit to Vegetable)
Day 2 - Juice fast - blend your fruit and vegetables this will prepare your body for your liquid diet over the next few days. You can also opt for tomato soup.
Day 3 - Orange Juice (from orange itself! No Tropicana or anything like that lol)

Phase 2 before you get into phase 2 you should make sure you have everything you need for the 10 day cleanse. Below are substitutes for those that may not be able to find the ingredients locally:

Maple syrup- Pure Honey (not approved by SB), sugar cane
Apparently Maple Syrup Grade B or C are the best to use.....the darker the better! No Aunt Jemima as that is just refined sugar!! Maple Syrup has vitamins and minerals that will sustain your body for the 10 day cleanse which is why SB recommends it.

Lemonade Recipe

Fresh Lemons (2 tablespoons)
Maple Syrup (2 tablespoons)
1/10th teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (or as much as you can stand)
8 oz/ 250ml Pure water

Make sure you roll the lemon on the work top to make it softer when you are squeezing it. Then you mix all the ingredients in your bottle or glass! Simple! 

It is recommended to drink within 15 minutes, but heck we all have a life don't we?! You can prepare it before hand by just mixing the lemon and maple syrup in your bottle and then when you are ready to drink add the remaining ingredients! This will keep the enzymes from the lemon from dying and make the mixture more effective.

You should also drink normal water through out the day when you feel hungry. When you get that feeling of 'weakness' then maybe its time to get your lemonade out! :) 

I'd suggest you listen to your body and don't go into the cleanse thinking only that you want to lose X amount of weight thereby depriving yourself! You are already at a caloric deficit and resting your bodies digestive function so of course you will lose weight and more importantly it will help to clear the toxins in your body, so say the advocates of this cleanse. What I'm trying to say is make sure you drink a minimum of 8 to 12 glasses a day

Bowel Movement
This is the main part of the Master Cleanse, which is why you will need some form of Herbal Laxative in which you should drink before bed to help you with bowel movement in the morning. 

Some people also do a salt water flush in the morning but I opt not to do that!! If you want to do this as well you need to get some CELTIC SEA SALT (2 teaspoons) and 1 quarter of warm water. I will not discuss the ins and outs of the SWF as I have not read up on it simply because I won't be doing this extra step, I personally find that herbal tea usually does the trick (try and avoid the ones with caffeine in it, lol I recently had a mishap with that! couldn't sleep for 40 hours,not because I kept going but because I had so much energy I just couldn't sleep!!!)

Phase 3 this is the same as Phase 1 however in the reverse order! This is the most important stage and you MUST follow through! 

Here is a quote from Tom Woloshyn’s On the Easing – out :The important transition period of moving from lemonade to food will prepare your digestive system for more and more complex foods so that it does not become overwhelmed. Just as you wouldn't try running a marathon after being a couch potato for three years, you wouldn't brake a cleanse by launching into full-feasting mode. You want your digestive system to get well-deserved brake so that your body can start back on the right track.

And this is really what the Master Cleanse is about, getting your body back on track! Getting rid of the toxins in your body in order to start or continue a healthy lifestyle. This is not a lifestyle you can keep up and it is not a diet plan! Some people might see it as extreme however it is a 10 day program and if done properly you will get the benefits you want out of it: Detoxing and weight loss. 

Once I complete the Master Cleanse I will keep away as much as possible from processed foods!!

PROS
  1. It is tested by many. The master cleanse was developed over 60 years ago by Mr. Stanley Burroughs as a detoxification program. Master Cleanse has been used by countless individuals in efforts to rid the body of toxins, get healthy and lose weight.
  2. It’s cheap. Financially, there is not a lot of money required to participate in this program. The requirements include natural lemons, cayenne pepper, maple syrup.
  3. It has a pleasant taste. Unlike other diets, the taste is natural and palatable. The Master Cleanse has been nicknamed the lemonade diet. Ironically, the master cleanse is neither a diet or contains lemonade. It just contains lemons and maple syrup which gives the solution a sweet pleasant taste.
  4. It’s quick. This diet plan only consists of participating for 10 days. There is no long and draining process that can stretch out for weeks or months like other detox or diet plans.
  5. It gives results. Many who have gone through the master cleanse swear by the results. During the 10 day period, you cleanse your body of all the built up waste material, mucus and chemicals that may have built up over the years. The result is a loss in unhealthy weight, a healthier body, and more energy and desire for a healthy lifestyle.
CONS
  1. You follow a strict liquid diet. Liquid diets can take some adjustment getting used to. Your body is used to eating solid food, so you have to prepare your body (and your mind) for a new way of eating for 10 days.
  2. May require a recuperating period for some. Immediately after your 10 days, your body may need time to get adjusted back to eating solid food again. Technically, this can be considered being in favour of the master cleanse, for many desire a more lighter healthier diet after completing the program.
  3. Possible loss of energy during the program. Because you are only drinking liquids for 10 days, you may experience fatigue, feelings of hunger, and a sense of being drained for a few days. This is a result of the body desiring the diet it had been accustomed to. Despite this, your energy should return within a few days. In many cases, some have experienced double the energy and fitness.
  4.  Takes self and outside motivation. Going without solid food can wear on many. Mentally, you feel as though you are not eating. The master cleanse is designed to give you all the vitamins and nutrients you need during the detox period, but It can be very difficult to leave behind old ways and give up without the proper motivation and guidance.
  5. Toilet Time. You may find yourself in the bathroom a lot more than usual during some periods of the program. All the excess waste and toxins are being released and there is one main way to release them.


So that's all I have learnt so far from the Master Cleanse! I will be going to the Whole Food store to purchase the needful and start this cleanse on 9/12/2012 to 18/12/2012.
